Getting a job in today’s fast-paced world requires new types of skills. The India Skills Report 2026 helps us understand exactly how prepared young Indians are for the modern workplace. It looks at which states are doing the best, what subjects employers are looking for, and how technology is changing the way we work.

More Young People are Ready for Jobs
The good news is that youth employability in India is growing. For 2026, about 56.35% of young people are considered ready to be hired. This is a solid improvement from 54.81% in 2025 and 46.20% back in 2022.
The Best States for Job Readiness
When looking at which states have the most employable youth, Uttar Pradesh surprisingly took the number one spot. The top five states are:

The Shift Toward AI and Freelance Work
The traditional 9-to-5 office job is no longer the only option. The job market is now heavily focused on digital skills and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Rise of AI: India is becoming a global leader in technology, currently holding 16% of the world’s AI talent. By 2027, the country is expected to have 1.25 million AI specialists.
The Gig Economy: More and more people are choosing freelance or “gig” work. By the year 2030, experts predict there will be 23.5 million freelance workers in India.
What Degrees and Age Groups Get Hired the Most?
If you want to get hired quickly, science and technology degrees are still the safest bet.
Students who study Computer Science and Information Technology have the highest employability rate at roughly 78%.
This is closely followed by Instrument Engineering (77%), Electronics (75%), and Mechanical Engineering (63%).
When it comes to age, young adults between 22 and 25 years old are the most employable (75%). This makes sense, as this is the age when most students finish their college degrees and actively start hunting for full-time jobs.
How the Government is Helping
While students are working hard to learn new skills, the government has set up several programs to make finding a job easier:
PMKVY 4.0: A training program that teaches young people modern skills like robotics, AI, and green technology.
National Credit Framework: A system that mixes regular academic studies with practical, hands-on job training.
Code on Social Security (2020): A set of rules designed to make sure freelance and gig workers get fair pay, basic rights, and legal protection.
Skill India Digital Hub: An online platform where people can learn bite-sized skills (micro-credentials) and get matched with companies that are hiring.
About the Report
This is the 13th annual edition of the India Skills Report. It is put together by organizations like ETS and Wheebox, along with industry and education groups like CII and AICTE.
To get these results, they tested 100,000 young people across the country and gathered feedback from 10,000 employers. The main goal of the report is to find the “gap” between what schools are teaching and what companies actually need—so that the education system can be improved for the future.
