When we shop on apps like Amazon, Flipkart, or food delivery platforms, we often think we are in full control of our choices. However, these platforms use clever tricks to influence what we buy and how much we spend.
To stop these unfair practices, the Indian Government has announced new E-Commerce Rules. These rules will officially start on January 1, 2027, and are designed to make online shopping safer and more honest for everyone.
Here is a simple breakdown of what is changing and how it helps you.
1. No More Fake Discounts
We all love big online sales with tags like “50% Off.” But often, companies artificially increase the original price just to make the discount look huge.
The New Rule: Shopping apps can no longer trick you with fake original prices. When they show a discount, they must also show the lowest price that the item was sold for in the last 30 days. This proves whether you are actually getting a good deal or not.
2. Fair and Honest Search Results
When you search for a laptop or a pair of shoes, the first few items you see are often there because companies paid the platform to put them at the top, not because they are the best option for you.
The New Rule: Shopping apps are no longer allowed to mess with search results to trick you. If a brand paid to show up first, the app must clearly label it as a “Sponsored” product so you know it is an advertisement.
3. A Ban on Sneaky Shopping Tricks
Platforms often use manipulative designs, known as “dark patterns,” to pressure you into spending more money. The new rules strictly ban these tricks, including:
Fake Urgency: Showing fake timers like “Only 2 minutes left!” to make you panic and buy without thinking.
Sneaking Items into Your Cart: Automatically adding extra things to your bill, like a phone case or extended warranty, hoping you won’t notice before paying.
Surprise Fees: Advertising a meal for ₹200, but secretly adding heavy “service fees,” “handling fees,” or “weather fees” at the final payment screen.
4. Better Privacy for Your Data
Have you ever added an item to your cart, closed the app, and then suddenly received a message offering you a discount to finish buying it? Apps track every click and search you make.
The New Rule: Companies can no longer use your personal shopping data behind your back. They must ask for your clear permission before tracking and using your information.
5. Clear Product Information
Before you spend your money, you deserve to know exactly what you are getting.
The New Rule: Sellers must display clear and complete information on the product page. This includes exact expiry dates (which is very important for food and groceries), clear return and warranty policies, and the “Country of Origin” so you know exactly where the product was made.
6. Easier Ways to Fix Problems
In the past, complaining about a bad online order could be frustrating, with millions of buyers feeling ignored by automated bots.
The New Rule: Every shopping app must now connect directly to the National Consumer Helpline. They are also required to hire a dedicated officer to handle customer complaints and must give you a proper receipt of your complaint so it doesn’t get ignored.
Summary
These new rules are not just about punishing bad sellers; they are about cleaning up the entire internet shopping experience. By forcing companies to be transparent about prices, fees, and data, the government is giving the power back to you—the buyer—so you can shop with confidence and peace of mind.
