The trouble started when the US Ambassador to India visited Jammu and Kashmir, and later Ladakh. While in Kashmir, he met with local leaders and publicly stated that Jammu and Kashmir is a very important part of India.
This comment made Pakistan very angry because it destroys their arguments about the region. To make matters worse for Pakistan, the US is also thinking about removing its travel warning for Kashmir. Right now, the US tells its citizens to be careful traveling there, which hurts local business. If the warning is lifted, it will be a big win for Indian tourism.
Pakistan was so upset by the Ambassador’s words that they called in a US official in Islamabad to complain. However, the US did not take back its statement, showing they are sticking to their position.
Embassy Drama Between India and Pakistan
The disagreements have also led to actions on the ground. On August 17th, Pakistan decided to remove the security barricades outside the Indian embassy building in Islamabad.
To show they won’t be pushed around, India did the exact same thing three days later. They removed the barricades outside the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi. While the embassy in Delhi is still very safe and closely watched, India did this to send a clear message: if Pakistan tries to provoke India, India will respond immediately.
Suspicious Military Flights
At the same time, there are worries about military activity. Over a short period of just a few days, a large number of military cargo planes from China and Turkey were seen landing at a Pakistani airbase.
Experts believe these planes were dropping off weapons, most likely military drones. There is a fear that Pakistan is getting ready to use these drones for small, quick attacks against India. Their plan might be to attack and quickly calm things down before India has a chance to strike back with its heavier weapons, like fighter jets or large missiles.
New Friendships and Future Worries
Pakistan is acting bolder lately because it recently made new defense deals with Turkey and Saudi Arabia. If a big fight breaks out with India, Pakistan hopes these countries will step in to help stop the fighting.
However, experts point out that Turkey is a member of NATO. This means Turkey is highly unlikely to actually send its military to help Pakistan, because doing so could drag the rest of the NATO countries into a war they want no part of.
