Whenever world leaders gather for big meetings, climate change is always a main topic. This makes sense, because all our human progress means nothing if our planet becomes too hot to live on. Recently, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report that shared a harsh truth about our future.
The Hard Truth: We Cannot Stop It
For years, countries around the world promised to keep global warming below 1.5°C. But the new UN report says this goal is no longer possible. We are definitely going to cross that line. Even if the whole world does everything right from today forward, global temperatures are still expected to rise to at least 1.8°C.
The New Plan: Overshoot, Peak, and Decline
So, should we just give up? Absolutely not. We just need to change our strategy. Experts are now focusing on a plan called “Overshoot, Peak, and Decline.”
Overshoot: We have to accept that global temperatures will go past the 1.5°C mark.
Peak: We must control how high the temperature goes. The new goal is to stop the warming at around 1.8°C or 1.9°C so we can avoid the worst natural disasters.
Decline: Once the temperature reaches that top point (the peak), the world must work together to slowly cool the planet back down.
Who Should Pay for the Damage?
As floods, droughts, and heatwaves get worse, smaller and poorer countries are asking for help. For example, nations like Nepal are asking bigger economies to pay for climate damages.
However, we have to look at who actually caused the problem. Rich, developed countries created the most pollution in the past when they were building their wealth and factories. Developing nations, like India, actually create much less pollution per person. Because of this, the rich nations that historically caused the most damage should be the ones providing the money to help fix it.
Looking Forward
In the end, it doesn’t matter who is to blame—climate change is a danger to every single person on Earth. We can no longer stop the planet from crossing the 1.5°C mark, but we must unite right now to stop it from going much higher. Our future depends on it.
