You might have noticed that some banks were specially kept open on Sunday, September 27. This was done to help people finish their important bank work early. Why? Because a massive three-day bank strike has been planned across the country from September 28 to September 30. Let’s break down why bank employees are protesting.
Who is going on strike?
The strike is being led by a large group called the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). They speak for about 90% of all bank workers in India. When they decide to stop working, almost the entire banking system pauses.
Why are they protesting? (The Main Demands)
1. A Five-Day Work Week
Right now, bank workers get Sundays off, along with the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. They want to change this so they have every Saturday and Sunday off, just like many IT companies and even the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
To make sure the work doesn’t suffer, employees have offered to work about 40 extra minutes from Monday to Friday. However, the government is hesitant. They worry that common people, who work all week, rely on Saturdays to visit the bank for things like loans and paperwork.
2. Fair Bonuses for Everyone
A few years ago, a rule was made to give bank workers extra money (incentives) if their specific bank performed well and made profits. But in 2024, the rules were changed so that only high-ranking managers get these extra benefits.
The unions are very upset about this. They argue that a bank succeeds because of teamwork. Cashiers, clerks, and back-office staff work just as hard as the top bosses, so everyone should share in the reward.
3. Better Retirement Rules
Besides the work week and bonuses, the workers are also asking for better pensions and fair retirement benefits for older employees.
Why is this strike happening right now?
September 30 is a very critical day for banks. It is the close of the half-year accounting period, meaning there is a lot of paperwork and money-balancing to do. Striking on this specific day is meant to show the government how important the workers are.
What happens next?
The bank workers have given a strict warning. This three-day strike is just to get the government to sit down and talk. If the government does not agree to their demands, the unions plan to go on an endless, continuous strike starting October 26.
Now, everyone is waiting to see if the government and the bank workers can find a friendly solution before October comes around.
