The fifth edition of the Global Passport Index for 2026 has been released. Unlike older lists that only care about how many countries you can visit without a visa, this index looks at the bigger picture to find the most valuable passports in the world.
How is the Score Decided?
Created by a group called Global Citizen Solutions, this index grades passports using three main categories:
Travel Freedom (50%): How easily citizens can travel the world.
Business and Money (25%): The investment opportunities available in the country.
Daily Life (25%): The overall quality of life for the people living there.
The Top 10: Europe Takes the Lead
European nations completely dominated the top of the list this year, grabbing 9 out of the 10 highest spots.
Here are the top 10 strongest passports for 2026:
Sweden (Took first place because of its very high scores in both quality of life and business)
Switzerland
Finland
Germany
Netherlands
Denmark
Ireland
United Kingdom
Norway
Singapore (The only country on the top 10 list that is not in Europe!)
Where Does India Stand?
Out of 200 countries checked in this report, India landed in 125th place overall.
When looking just at travel freedom, India ranked 135th.
When looking at quality of life, India ranked 118th.
Currently, holding an Indian passport allows you to travel to 56 places without needing to apply for a visa ahead of time. These are mostly located in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. However, if an Indian citizen wants to visit major places like the United States, the United Kingdom, or most of Europe, they still need to go through the advance visa process.
Why Do Other Lists Show Different Ranks?
You might see India ranked higher on other news sites. That is because there are a few different groups that rank passports, and they all use different rules:
- The Global Passport Index: Looks at travel, money, and lifestyle combined. (Sweden is #1; India is #125).
- The Henley Passport Index: Focuses only on how easy it is to travel. (Singapore is #1; India ranks around #75 to #80).
- Arton Capital’s Passport Index: A list that updates in real-time based on live visa rules. (The United Arab Emirates is #1; India ranks #65).
