Recently, world leaders gathered in Mongolia for a major meeting called COP17. The main goal was to figure out how to stop “desertification,” which is when healthy land dries up and turns into desert. The theme of the meeting was “Restoring Land, Restoring Hope.” The next meeting, COP18, is scheduled for 2027 in Egypt.
Healing the Earth the Right Way
When we think about fixing the environment, we usually think about planting trees. However, the experts at this meeting warned that planting trees everywhere is not always the best idea.
Protecting Grasslands: Grasslands and dry areas have their own special types of plants and animals.
Saving Unique Animals: Birds like the Great Indian Bustard need dry, grassy spaces to survive. If we turn their home into a thick forest, they will die out.
Rethinking “Wastelands”: Just because a piece of land only grows short grass doesn’t mean it is a “wasteland.” These areas are incredibly valuable for local farmers, grazing animals, and nature.
New Global Plans to Fight Drought
To help lands that are drying up, the countries at the meeting came up with a few major tools and ideas:
Smart Technology: They are rolling out a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool that will help predict droughts and figure out which areas need help the most.
Funding the Fight: A massive fund of 1.3 billion dollars was promised to help build systems that can survive droughts, though countries are not legally forced to pay this money.
What is India Doing to Help?
India has been working hard to heal damaged land within its own borders. They are part of a global promise called the Bonn Challenge to fix dried-up land by 2030, and India is already very close to hitting its goals.
