New Delhi recently saw a massive lockdown as the government tried to stop widespread public protests. To keep people off the streets, authorities shut down metro stations, canceled trains, and set up multiple layers of barricades. Over 4,000 security personnel, drones, and hundreds of cameras were deployed to monitor the city. Despite this extreme security, young people and students continued to march, proving that the strict blockade failed to silence the public.
Allegations of Street Violence and Law Enforcement Bias
A major concern during these events has been the violence directed at protesters. Videos and reports showed members of radical private groups attacking students and women on the streets. Instead of keeping the peace, the local police appeared to allow these groups to act freely, raising serious questions about the safety of peaceful marchers and the fairness of law enforcement.
Targeting of Independent Media, Commentators, and Marchers
The crackdown also targeted those reporting on the ground and speaking out online. Well-known internet personalities and independent journalists were taken from their homes or hotels without proper arrest warrants. Detained protesters were locked inside specially designed police buses equipped with tiny, airless cells. The basic respect between the police and the press completely broke down as reporters covering the events faced harassment and arrest.
Defiance of Supreme Court Directives and Lawmakers’ Detentions
Even India’s Supreme Court stepped in, ordering the police to stop illegal arrests and allow public transport to run normally. However, authorities largely ignored these orders, going as far as detaining a Member of Parliament.
Global Fallout and Growing Economic Uncertainty
This heavy-handed approach has severely damaged the country’s global image. Major foreign newspapers and the United Nations have strongly criticized the government for violating basic human rights. At the same time, the country’s economy is feeling the strain, with the value of the Rupee dropping significantly. By trying to force people into silence, the administration has only sparked more anger and harmed the nation’s standing on the world stage.
