As we grow older and leave our school days behind, there are some memories that always stay with us. We remember the teacher who called our name, the one who cheered us on when we were scared, and the simple lessons that helped us in real life. Teachers do much more than teach from books. They teach us how to be brave, how to believe in ourselves, and how to face the world.
To celebrate Teachers’ Day, people from different walks of life—including politician and former teacher Shri Kalicharan Singh, retired army officer Major General Sanjay Meston, and senior journalist Ms. Aditi Tandon—came together to share their childhood memories. They talked about the teachers they loved, the ones they were scared of, and the lessons they will never forget.
From Sitting on the Floor to Modern Schools
Shri Kalicharan Singh shared a beautiful memory that shows how much schools have changed. About 60 years ago, as a student in a village, he did not have desks or chairs. Students sat on the floor on simple mats, and the teachers sat on the ground right there with them.
Years later, in 1981, when he became a math teacher himself, things were only a little better. Teachers finally had chairs, but the students still didn’t have proper desks. Today, as a politician visiting modern schools, he sees classrooms full of great facilities. But his story reminds us that true education doesn’t need fancy furniture—it just needs a dedicated teacher.
What Makes a School Great?
During the discussion, the group agreed on one very important thing: a great school isn’t about big buildings or expensive classrooms. It is about the teachers.
We might forget what our school building looked like, but we never forget the teachers who guided us. When we are young, we often don’t know what we are good at. But a good teacher sees our hidden talents and helps us grow in the right direction.

Long after we graduate and the classrooms become quiet, the voices of our teachers stay in our minds. They continue to guide us through life. The successful guests sharing their stories were living proof of this.
