Recently, the Indian government decided that new Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers do not need special environmental checks to be built. While India is rolling out the red carpet for these massive tech hubs to grow its digital economy, Western countries are doing the exact opposite.
Why the West is Saying No to Data Centers
Places like New York, Texas, and parts of Europe are pausing or completely banning new data centers. They are stopping these projects for a few major reasons:
Massive Power Drain: Data centers consume huge amounts of electricity, which can crash local power grids and cause blackouts.
Extreme Water Use: They require millions of gallons of clean water just to keep their computers cool.
Health Hazards: They emit a constant, low-frequency humming noise that causes sleep loss, anxiety, and headaches for people living nearby.
Meanwhile, India is planning to build over 250 new data centers. Just one of these mega-centers can require more electricity than an entire major city uses.
The Hidden Danger: Pollution Colonialism
The problem goes far beyond technology. Rich nations are increasingly using countries like India as a dumping ground for their dirty, banned industries.
Toxic Factories: A chemical plant that made “forever chemicals” poisoned local water in Italy. When the government shut it down, the entire factory was simply packed up, shipped to Maharashtra, and allowed to restart operations.
Deadly Farming Chemicals: A pesticide so dangerous that a few drops can kill a human is banned in 74 countries. Yet, the same countries that banned it still manufacture it to sell to Indian farmers.
Unhealthy Baby Food: A famous multinational brand sells baby food with zero added sugar in Europe. However, they add an average of 3 grams of sugar to the exact same baby food sold in India, risking the health of Indian children.
Choosing Health Over Wealth
We have to ask ourselves: Are global companies coming to India because of our skilled workers, or because it is easier to pollute here without facing consequences?
Foreign investment is important for a growing country, but it should not cost us our clean water, safe food, and healthy environment. Our laws must protect citizens first, rather than just making it easy for foreign companies to do business.
