The Indian government is taking strong steps to protect children online. Recently, officials sent a serious legal warning to Meta, the company that owns Instagram and Facebook. The government discovered that paid advertisements on Instagram were being used to promote and sell illegal, abusive material involving children. Meta has been given just seven days to explain how this happened and to fix the problem, or else they will face serious legal trouble.
How the Hidden Ads Work
Criminals are using clever tricks to get past the rules. They buy regular ads on Instagram but use secret code words or innocent-looking pictures to hide what they are actually doing. When a user clicks on one of these ads, it takes them away from Instagram to a different messaging app, like Telegram. Once there, the criminals try to sell the illegal videos and pictures.
Why Paid Ads Are a Bigger Deal
Usually, if a normal user posts something illegal, the platform’s computer system eventually finds it and deletes it. The law generally gives tech companies a break in these situations, knowing they cannot catch every bad post the second it goes up.
However, paid ads are a different story. Before an ad goes live, Meta is supposed to review it, approve it, and then the company makes money from it. Because Meta actively approves and profits from these advertisements, the government believes the company has a much higher responsibility to make sure the ads are safe and legal.
How the System Makes It Worse
Another big issue is how Instagram’s background system, or algorithm, works. If someone clicks on one of these bad ads—even just out of curiosity—the system thinks the ad is popular. It then automatically pushes that ad to even more people, helping the criminals reach a wider audience.
While Meta uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to try and stop illegal posts, the computers are not perfect. The AI often gets confused by the secret code words the criminals use, which is why these harmful ads are slipping through the cracks.
What the Government is Demanding
India has a strict “zero tolerance” rule when it comes to harming children. The government has ordered Meta to do the following right away:
Stop the Ads: Immediately block any advertisements that promote child abuse material.
Clean the Platform: Delete any related illegal content from Instagram.
Explain the Process: Provide a clear explanation of how they check their ads and what they are doing to keep children safe.
Report Back: Submit a full report within seven days.
A Worldwide Effort
India already has strong laws—like the Information Technology Rules and the POCSO Act—to punish these crimes and force tech companies to cooperate. But India is not fighting this battle alone.
All over the world, governments are demanding better safety online. Places like the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the European Union are all creating strict laws to force massive tech companies to clean up their platforms and protect users from illegal content.
