India and Canada are working hard to become close partners again. After a difficult few years, the two countries are putting their past disagreements behind them to focus on trade, security, and the future.
To mark this new chapter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December 2026. This will be his first official trip to Canada in over a decade.
Moving Past the Arguments
Just a few years ago, in 2023, the relationship between India and Canada hit a low point. The previous Canadian government made public accusations against India, which broke down trust.
However, things changed when Canada got a new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, in 2025. Instead of fighting in public, the new Canadian government chose to handle sensitive security issues quietly and professionally behind closed doors. Earlier this year, top security officials from both countries met to start sharing information again, which has helped rebuild trust.
Focusing on Business and Trade
Now that they are getting along better, both countries want to do more business together. Recently, Canada sent its largest trade group to India in over 30 years.
Currently, India and Canada trade about $8 to $9 billion worth of goods a year. They have set a massive new goal: to increase this to $70 billion by 2030. To make this happen, they are rushing to finalize a major trade deal called the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) before PM Modi’s visit. Canada already sells important materials to India, like uranium for energy and potash for farming, and they hope to expand into oil, gas, and new technologies.
Why is This Happening Now?
A big reason for this new friendship is changes happening around the world, especially in the United States. Canada is trying to stop relying so heavily on the U.S. for its economy and is looking for reliable friends elsewhere. India is a perfect fit.
Additionally, as the U.S. makes it harder for foreign students and workers to enter, Canada is stepping up. Canada is quickly becoming the top choice for smart and talented Indian students, tech workers, and professionals. This movement of people will help both countries invent new things and grow their economies together.
What to Expect Next
When Prime Minister Modi visits Canada in December, the two countries are expected to make big announcements. They will likely agree to work closer together on clean energy, advanced technology, defense, and mining important minerals.
The main goal is no longer just to fix a broken relationship, but to build a strong, lasting partnership that benefits the people of both India and Canada for many years to come.
