How India is Becoming a Global Hub for Microchips

Microchips—also known as semiconductors—are the tiny “brains” that power almost everything we use today, from smartphones and cars to hospital equipment and space satellites. As new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles become more common, the world needs more of these chips than ever before.

India has recognized this massive demand and is working quickly to build its own microchip industry, aiming to become a global tech leader.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Before making chips, India focused on making the gadgets that use them. Over the last decade, the country’s electronics industry has grown incredibly fast. India is now the second-largest mobile phone maker in the world.

This boom in electronics didn’t just boost the economy; it created about 2.5 million jobs. Women have played a massive role in this success, making up about 70% of the workforce that builds mobile phones. Because India already has a strong base in making electronics, stepping up to make the chips that go inside them is the natural next step.

Phase 1: Kickstarting the Mission

To get the chip industry off the ground, the Indian government launched a massive ₹76,000 crore plan in late 2021. The goal was to build a complete network for chip-making so the country wouldn’t have to rely on outside suppliers during global crises.

The results have been very positive. The government approved 12 major chip manufacturing projects across different states. Today, three of these facilities have already started commercial production, turning India’s big tech dreams into reality.

Phase 2: Expanding the Vision

In 2026, India took things a step further by announcing “Semicon India 2.0.” This new phase proves that India’s plans are long-term.

Instead of just building factories, this new plan focuses on the entire process from start to finish. This includes:

Designing new chips

Gathering the special materials and equipment needed

Research and development (R&D)

Advanced packaging and testing

To make this happen, India is teaming up with friendly nations like the US, Japan, and European countries. Big global tech companies are also heavily investing in India to help build this new industry.

Preparing the Next Generation

A big industry needs smart, skilled workers. India already has a head start, as nearly 20% of the world’s chip designers are Indian.

To prepare for the future, the government is training thousands of students. Over 500 engineering colleges have updated their classes to include semiconductor technology, and special tools are being given to schools so students can learn how to design actual chips.

Why This Matters

Making microchips at home is about much more than just factory work. It is about national security, creating high-paying jobs, and ensuring India controls its own technological future. By building a strong, reliable chip industry, India is taking a massive leap toward becoming a fully developed and self-reliant nation.
