The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine recently caused a terrible tragedy for Indian families. During a missile strike on a commercial ship at Ukraine’s Odesa port, four Indian citizens lost their lives.
Here is a simple breakdown of what happened and why it matters.
What Happened?
The attack involved a cargo ship called the MV Golden Leo. The ship had just finished loading corn and was leaving the Odesa port using a supposedly safe shipping route.
Suddenly, the ship was hit by three missiles and caught on fire. Rescue teams worked hard and managed to save eight crew members. Sadly, four Indians died, and another Indian sailor was badly injured. Ukraine has blamed Russia for the attack.
Why Target the Odesa Port?
This attack shows that the war is becoming more dangerous for regular trading ships. The Odesa port is very important for a few reasons:
Money for Ukraine: Odesa is Ukraine’s biggest port on the Black Sea. Ukraine makes a lot of its money by sending goods like wheat, corn, and cooking oil to other countries from this port.
War Strategy: By attacking ships here, Russia is trying to stop Ukraine from making money, which weakens Ukraine’s ability to fight the war.
Military Route: The port is also a main entry point for supplies and help coming from Western countries.
How Does This Affect the Rest of the World?
Ukraine grows a lot of the world’s food. Many countries, especially in Africa and Asia, depend on grain from Ukraine. When ships are attacked, it causes big problems everywhere:
Food like bread and corn gets more expensive.
Some countries might face food shortages.
Shipping companies have to pay more for insurance, making everything transported by sea more costly.
Why Are So Many Indians on These Ships?
You might wonder why Indian citizens were on a foreign ship in a war zone. The reason is that India provides a huge number of sailors to the world. About one out of every five sailors globally is from India. Hundreds of thousands of Indians work on oil tankers and cargo ships all over the world. Also, even though this ship was flying a different country’s flag, its owner is based in Mumbai.
What is India Doing About It?
The Indian government has strongly criticized the attack. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared its sadness with the victims’ families and said that whoever did this must be held responsible.
Right now, the Indian government is working closely with Ukraine to safely bring back the surviving crew members and the bodies of those who passed away. Since India has friendly relations with Russia, many people are waiting to see if the Indian government will speak directly to Russian leaders to make sure Indian workers are kept safe in the future.
