China’s Leap into the Future
In Beijing, a massive event showcasing humanoid robots recently took place. These machines are doing incredible things—they are breaking human sprinting records, cooking food, and working in factories. Behind this success is a strong foundation: years of patient research, massive financial backing, and a business environment that supports long-term goals over instant profits. Because of this supportive system, the companies building these robots are now highly successful and valued in the billions.
India’s Talent Migration
Around the same time, an inspiring story emerged from India, but with a disappointing twist. A young entrepreneur in Bengaluru developed a groundbreaking way to store normal digital data inside biological DNA, drastically cutting down the costs. However, despite doing all the hard work and testing in India, she decided to move her company to the United States.
The reason was clear: local investors often focus too much on quick, quarterly profits. Breakthrough technologies, however, require years of patient financial support and a willingness to accept early failures.
What Needs to Change?
This situation points to a deeper issue in how new technologies are supported:
Research Spending: Countries like the US and China spend a much larger percentage of their wealth on research and development compared to India.
Funding Sources: In major global economies, private businesses fund most of the advanced research. In India, innovators have historically had to rely too heavily on the government.
Losing the Future: When a bright mind leaves, the home country doesn’t just lose one person. It loses future jobs, patents, wealth, and global recognition.
Fortunately, things are slowly improving, with private investments in Indian research finally starting to outpace government funding. The country has the talent and the bright ideas; the real challenge is building a supportive environment that gives these ideas the time and money they need to grow at home.
