Every year, dengue fever makes many people sick across India and puts a heavy burden on our hospitals. Until now, the only way to fight dengue was to stop mosquitoes and treat the sickness when it happened. But things are changing for the better. India has finally approved its very first vaccine to prevent dengue.
What is the New Vaccine?
The newly approved vaccine is called “Qdenga.” Here are the key facts you need to know about it:
Strong Protection: It protects against all four types of the dengue virus.
Who Can Take It: It is safe for people between the ages of 4 and 60.
How It Is Given: People need two shots of the vaccine, given three months apart.
It Works Well: Studies from other countries show it stops about 80% of dengue sickness and stops 90% of people from needing to go to the hospital.
Why is This So Important Now?
Dengue is changing. It used to happen mostly during the rainy season. Now, people are getting sick all year round. The sickness is also spreading to new areas in India. Mosquitoes have adapted to live inside our homes, shops, and small water puddles, making them harder to control.
Where Can You Get It?
At first, the vaccine will not be available in free government health programs because dengue does not affect all parts of India equally. Instead, you can buy it at private hospitals. One shot is expected to cost between ₹3,000 and ₹6,000.
Currently, the vaccine is imported from a company in Germany. However, an Indian company plans to start making it soon, which could make it easier to get in the future.
We Still Need to be Careful
Doctors warn that the vaccine is not a magic fix. We still have to do our part to stop mosquitoes from breeding. We must keep our neighborhoods clean and make sure water does not collect in old tires, pots, or coolers. The best way to fight dengue is to combine this new vaccine with clean habits and early mosquito control, even before the rainy season starts.
